Focus and Scope

International Journal of Epidemiology and Tropical Medicine (IJETM) welcomes high-quality original research articles, systematic and narrative reviews, short communications, outbreak investigation reports, and policy briefs. The journal covers a comprehensive spectrum of disciplines essential to understanding, preventing, and managing communicable diseases in tropical and subtropical regions.

IJETM prioritizes manuscripts that focus on, but are not limited to, the following five core themes:

1. Infectious & Tropical Disease Epidemiology

  • Surveillance & Outbreak Analytics: Methodologies for early detection, outbreak field investigations, contact tracing, and real-time monitoring of endemic and emerging pathogens.

  • Transmission Dynamics: Quantifying disease transmission patterns, basic/effective reproduction numbers (R0 / Rt), and risk factor evaluation within population groups.

  • Specific Pathogen Focus: Epidemiology of vector-borne infections (Dengue, Malaria, Chikungunya, Zika), respiratory pathogens (Tuberculosis, Influenza, COVID-19), blood-borne/sexually transmitted infections (HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis), waterborne/foodborne diarrheal diseases, and Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) such as Filariasis, Leprosy, and Schistosomiasis.

  • Emerging & Zoonotic Pathogens: Cross-species transmission events, spillover surveillance at the human-animal interface, and readiness for novel pandemic threats.

2. Clinical Tropical Medicine & Patient Management

  • Diagnostic Innovations: Field-ready point-of-care (POC) tests, rapid molecular assays, biomarker discoveries, and evaluation of diagnostic accuracy in low-resource settings.

  • Clinical Management & Protocols: Efficacy trials for therapeutic regimens, management of severe disease complications (e.g., severe malaria, dengue hemorrhagic fever, multi-organ failure), and supportive care optimization.

  • Antimicrobial & Antimalarial Resistance: Surveillance of drug resistance genes, mechanisms of resistance in bacteria, parasites, and fungi, alongside stewardship programs in tropical clinical settings.

  • Pediatric & Maternal Tropical Health: Vulnerability analyses, clinical course, and treatment outcomes of infectious diseases specifically in pregnant women, neonates, and children.

3. Vector Biology, Entomology & Vector Control

  • Medical Entomology: Species identification, population genetics, bionomics, feeding behaviors, and habitat preferences of vectors (mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, snails, and mites).

  • Vector-Pathogen Interactions: Vector competence, parasite/virus development within vectors, and co-infection dynamics.

  • Insecticide & Chemical Resistance: Surveillance of biochemical and target-site resistance mechanisms to insecticides, as well as bioassay evaluations of novel active ingredients.

  • Integrated Vector Management (IVM): Field trials of biological control agents (e.g., Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes), community-led environmental management, and novel vector interception technology (spatial repellents, attractive toxic sugar baits).

4. Spatial, Mathematical & Digital Epidemiology

  • Spatial Analysis & GIS: Spatial-temporal clustering of infectious diseases, habitat suitability modeling for vectors, and vulnerability mapping across geographic and ecological landscapes.

  • Predictive & Mathematical Modeling: Forecast models for seasonal transmission, simulation of intervention scenarios, and structural equation modeling of disease drivers.

  • Digital Health & Big Data: Machine learning applications for early warning systems, utilization of satellite/remote sensing data, mobility tracking, and health informatics in epidemiological research.

5. One Health, Health Policy & Global Health Systems

  • One Health Framework: Interdisciplinary studies integrating human health, veterinary public health, environmental changes, deforestation, and biodiversity loss in disease emergence.

  • Immunization & Preventive Strategies: Vaccine coverage evaluations, vaccine effectiveness studies, cold-chain logistics challenges, and strategies to overcome vaccine hesitancy.
