Background: Traditional markets are public facilities that play a vital role in community economic activity. Poor sanitation can increase the risk of spreading environmental-based diseases. This study aims to determine the hygiene and sanitation quality of traditional markets in Medan City and analyze their fulfillment of Healthy Market requirements.
Method: This study used a descriptive design with an observational approach. Data were collected through direct observation using a checklist based on the Healthy Market indicators of the Indonesian Ministry of Health Regulation No. 17 of 2020 at five traditional markets in Medan City: Melati Market, Pancur Batu Market, Simpang Selayang Market, Karya Anak Bangsa (KBN) Market, and Tavip Binjai Market.
Result: The study results showed that only Karya Anak Bangsa (KBN) Market met the Healthy Market category with a score of 78%. Meanwhile, Tavip Binjai Market scored 55.9%, Melati Market 52.5%, Pancur Batu Market 35.6%, and Simpang Selayang Market 30.5%, thus falling short of the minimum standard of 70%. The main problems identified included suboptimal waste management, poor drainage conditions, limited handwashing facilities, poor disease vector control, and inadequate implementation of PHBS.
Conclusion: The quality of hygiene and sanitation of traditional markets in Medan City generally still does not meet the Healthy Market standards based on the Indonesian Minister of Health Regulation Number 17 of 2020. Efforts are needed to improve sanitation facilities and increase clean and healthy living behaviors to create a healthy, safe, and comfortable market.
